In a recent survey conducted in 30 centres with large experience in intracoronary ultrasound, three dimensional reconstruction of intracoronary ultrasound was ranked as the technical development with the lowest priority,' suggesting that it is perceived by most users of intracoronary ultrasound as a research tool with limited clinical relevance. However, although cross sectional ultrasound provides unique information on lumen and wall pathology, it cannot determine the spatial relationships among multiple ultrasonic cross sections. The need to examine vessel architecture longitudinally explains the many efforts to develop methods of three dimensional reconstruction of intracoronary ultrasound images.2 3 In this paper we present the steps required for three dimensional reconstruction of intracoronary images and the methods of display and quantitative analysis. Limitations of the technique and its current and future clinical potential are discussed.

متن کاملReconstruction and quantification with three-dimensional intracoronary ultrasound. An update on techniques, challenges, and future directions.
Conventional two-dimensional intracoronary ultrasound enables the extent, distribution, and therapy of atherosclerotic plaques to be studied as it provides a unique tomographic visualization of both the vascular lumen and wall'". The most important limitation of two-dimensional intracoronary ultrasound in pre/poststudies is the matching of the target sites for serial measurement. This problem i...
متن کاملThree - dimensional Reconstruction of Intracoronary Ultrasound
Although intracoronary ultrasonography allows detailed tomographic imaging of the arterial wall, it fails to provide data on the structural architecture and longitudinal extent of arterial disease. This information is essential for decision making during therapeutic interventions. Three-dimensional reconstruction techniques offer visualization of the complex longitudinal architecture of atheros...

متن کاملUsefulness of three-dimensional reconstruction for interpretation and quantitative analysis of intracoronary ultrasound during stent deployment.
We examined 49 coronary stents in 33 patients after angiographically guided optimization of the deployment by intracoronary ultrasound, and compared the findings of a conventional 2-dimensional analysis approach with the results obtained from an automatic lumen recognition provided by a 3-dimensional reconstruction system. The automatic lumen analysis demonstrated that only 15 stents (31%) fulf...
